Bioluminescence is when an organism has the ability to organically produce light typically through internal chemical reactions. Bioluminescent waves are typically caused by plankton but are more colloquially referred to algae blooms as the plankton that creates bioluminescent light as night is also the same culprit for turning the water red during the day.
